Werner Saller was born in Upper Bavaria in 1966. Excursions on numerous instruments – from the recorder, accordion and zither to the trombone, via the double bass to the viola da gamba – finished with the viola. Years of practical experience of Bavarian folk music and in gamba consort-playing characterise his musical résumé. His studies led him to Munich and Lübeck, where he studied under Prof. Barbara Westphal until he gained his diploma in 1994. He took courses on solo and chamber music, and studied Baroque viola under Michi Gaigg, Ingrid Seifert, Ronny Rogoff, Prof. Walter Levin, and Christoph Coin, as well as attending seminars for musical phenomenology under Jordi Mora and Sergiu Celibidache. Since 1994 he has worked as a freelance musician and plays in various orchestras and chamber music formations, such as the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, La Stagione, Freitagsakademie, AlmaViva and others. Werner Saller has been an established member and Partner of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra since summer 2010.
