Bassoon

Javier Zafra

Born in Alicante, after studying there at the Oscar Esplà College of Music, where he learnt harmonics as well as the bassoon, he went to the Netherlands in 1996 to study historical bassoon there. He studied bassoon and chamber music under Donna Agrell and musicology under Peter van Heyguen at the Königlichen Konservatorium in Den Haag. Javier Zafra completed his diploma in Baroque bassoon with distinction in June 2000. He became a member of the European Union Baroque Orchestra (EUBO) in 1997, at that time under the leadership of Ton Koopman. He has also played with the Anima Eterna, the Orchestre des Champs Elysées, the Concert d’Astrée, and Al Ayre Espanol ensembles. He is particularly interested in chamber music. Javier Zafra is a member of the Nachtmusik wind sextet (Eric Hoeprich) and founded the els Sonadors de Martin i Soler wind octet. He also founded the Le Cercle de l’Harmonie orchestra in Paris, where he lives. Javier Zafra has been a permanent member of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra since 1999.
