300 Years 'Old Fritz'

The FBO musicians directed by Julia Schröder celebrate the 300th anniversary of the famous "Old Fritz" (King Frederick the Great of Prussia) with a rather unusual programme: one concert half centers around the music at the Prussian court and the other is devoted to Frederick's powerful conterpart: Empress Maria Theresia of Austria. Both monarchs ascended to the throne in 1740 and both of them wrote a great part of 18th-century history. As did their musicians.

Bach World Tour 2012 - Part 2

Johann Sebastian Bach's orchestral suites BWV 1066-1069 are the "musical calling-card" of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. In the last 20 years the musicians have performed these masterpieces in nearly all of the famous concerts halls in the world. In November 2011 the orchestral suites were released on CD with the harmonia mundi France label. The second part of the orchestra's "Bach World Tour" brings the FBO musicians to Australia and China.

The blue flower

Could there be stronger contrasting moods than the ones between Schubert's "Tragic" and Mendelssohn's "Italian" symphony? Perhaps. And between them a dreamy, introverted piece for piano and orchestra by Robert Schumann. Florestan and Eusebius, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, light and darkness in a single programme? Well, of course. How else could the musicians of the FBO with pianist Kristian Bezuidenhout and the young Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado follow the quest for the blue flower, the symbol for the eternal yearning of the Romantics?

Il pianto d'Arianna

In the manner of a pasticcio this concert programme attempts to tell its own story of the Arianna myth: with selected arias from three operas by Handel, Marcello and Porpora in combination with Pietro Locatelli's impressive concerto grosso Il pianto d’Arianna. Carolyn Sampson and Gottfried von der Goltz are just the perfect match for this musical storytelling event.

Mozart concertos in Schwetzingen

An all-Mozart programme with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra in the historical environment of a beautiful Rokoko theatre! This brings us all back to the eighteenth century again. Together with fortepiano expert Kristian Bezuidenhout the FBO musicians perform two of Mozart's wonderful piano concertos from the 1780s. The icing on the cake are the rarely played overture to Mozart's "The Impresario" and selected movements from the ballet music to his opera seria "Idomeneo, Re di Creta".

New Mendelssohn CD released

On 19 August a rather special CD with the FBO and Kristian Bezuidenhout was released by harmonia mundi France: with two concerts by the young Felix Mendelssohn it documents an unusual excursion of the Baroque specialists into the realm of the romantic.

FBO wins the Gramophone Award 2011

On 6 October, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra was presented with the Gramophone Award 2011 in the “Baroque Instrumental” category for its recording of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s “Sei Concerti per il cembalo concertato” Wq 43 with harpsichordist Andreas Staier on the harmonia mundi France label in April 2011.
